A. Population and Housing

A. Population and Housing

This section presents statistics on the resident and defacto populations of Hawaii and the counties, on vital statistics, i.e. births and deaths, and on the number of housing units.

The primary sources for population data are the annual population estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau and the ongoing series on visitors present and residents absent provided by the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT), Research & Economic Analysis (READ), Tourism Research Branch. Earlier figures on population are given in Historical Statistics of Hawaii, Sections 1 and 3.

The major source for data on vital statistics is the Hawaii Health Survey conducted regularly since 1969 by the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH). DOH data are available through 2022. Long-term trends are found in Historical Statistics of Hawaii, Section 2.

The principal source for housing data is the U.S. Census Bureau, Population and Housing Unit Estimates program. Persons interested in figures for earlier periods should consult Historical Statistics of Hawaii, Section 15.
