A new planned development could bring big changes to Kaka’ako.

HONOLULU (KITV4) — A newly planned development could bring even more changes to the Honolulu skyline.

Ward Village recently submitted a request to the Hawaii Community Development Authority to redevelop the Kaka’ako community’s Diamond Head side.

The entire Ward Village community sprawls across 60 acres, but the proposed redesign and reconstruction would target the current Ward Center parcel.

Set to be constructed in separate phases, two new structures would include 390 residential units and 20,000 square feet of commercial ground floor. As for what redevelopment could bring to Village workers and patrons, initial reactions are as different as their priorities.

“People get outbid all the time by people who move here who make a lot more, who want a big million-dollar home all the way to the west side from down here,” said Keilani Moore, a resident of Kalihi.  “So it’s not very promising. That’s why a lot of people talk about being price out of paradise and stuff. Especially being Native Hawaiians. It’s not the greatest news to us.”

Since permit applications were only recently submitted, a representative for the Howard Hughes Corporation says groundbreaking is probably still about two years away.
