The HCDA recently began a bicycle sharing program to better embody the principles of transit oriented development.  As bicycling represents one form of alternative transportation, we want to do our part to further reduce automobile use, especially in the workplace.  Many of the trips taken in our state van are to areas within one mile from the HCDA office, so we recognize we can reduce our carbon footprint by encouraging bicycling and walking instead.

With our new fleet of HCDA bicycles, staff members can travel to meetings downtown and at the State Capitol more easily and efficiently.  They can also ride to the parks of Kakaako to conduct park inspections and fulfill other duties throughout the district in a more hands-on manner.  The HCDA program will also enhance public bicycle sharing programs that are spreading throughout Honolulu as we all move toward greater sustainability.

By supporting and encouraging more options like these, it is the HCDA’s hope that Kakaako can truly become the live, work, play community that is was envisioned to be.
