Vandalism temporarily closes portion of Kakaako dog park

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii Community Development Authority says repeated incidents of vandalism have forced the temporary closure of part of a dog park in Kakaako.

The HCDA said vandalism to the irrigation system has affected both the large and small dog sections of Kolowalu Dog Park on Queen Street.

As a result, officials are closing the large dog park for maintenance and lawn treatment from May 12 through June 9.

During the closure, work will entail further rehabilitation of the lawn, additional repairs to the irrigation system, and the installation of paver stones to prevent muddy conditions at the entrance, where the highest foot traffic occurs.

To prevent trip hazards, additional pavers will be used in other high-traffic areas and spots where dog digging occurs, officials said.

The Kolowalu Dog Park celebrated its grand opening on Feb. 8, and features two separate playgrounds for small and big dogs.
