Mother Waldron Park

HART’s contractors will begin conducting AIS excavations at the pier locations in Mother Waldron Park and in the Coral Street extension immediately adjacent to the park on Monday, August 12, 2024.  The contractor has scheduled two to three days to dig at each site and afterward, the sites will be plated or possibly backfilled at the discretion of the monitors present.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) is the semi-autonomous public transit authority responsible for the project’s planning, design, and construction for an 18.9-mile, automated fixed-guideway rail system with 19 stations extending from East Kapolei Station to a temporary terminus at the Civic Center Station.

Background

Mother Waldron Park is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Hawaii State Register of Historic Places as an Art Deco Park. Built in 1937, on a 1.76-acre parcel it is bound by Coral, Halekauwila, and Pohukaina Streets.

HCDA and the Department of Land and Natural Resources have shared ownership of Mother Waldron Park, that is managed by the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation. It is a space that is well-used for various activities. However, it has been beset with homeless and reports of illegal activities. The HCDA is looking at ways to activate the park with positive activities.

The historic Park is adjacent to the Skyline guideway within the City Center Guideway and Stations. HART has prepared a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for Mother Waldron Park.  Each HART CLR documents the history and significance of the historic designed landscape as well as the historical and cultural contexts that influenced changes to the physical landscape.  The CLRs also describe how these landscapes have changed over time, evaluates their integrity, and provides treatment recommendations for long-term management of these landscapes.
