Waiākea Peninsula
Waiākea Peninsula is on the island of Hawaiʻi along the Hilo Bay shoreline, centrally located near downtown Hilo, Hilo Harbor, and the Hilo Airport.
The State of Hawai‘i, Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), and the Hawaiʻi Community Development Authority (HCDA) worked with consultants to prepare a preliminary strategic assessment of the land DLNR owns at Waiākea Peninsula.
Background
DLNR and HCDA hosted a community meeting and open house on December 4, 2023 to discuss a study to re-envision the Waiākea Peninsula.
Project team members discussed economic market studies and the potential land uses being evaluated. Project team members were also available in an open house setting to hear the community’s thoughts on:
- Examples of waterfront and other re-development projects elsewhere
- Potential future land uses at Waiākea Peninsula
- Governance and land stewardship considerations
- Your other ideas for the future Waiākea Peninsula
